Voltage Indicator - Transformer substitute

Posted by: Jakub Grelak on

Hello!

I trust this post finds you well. I am a student at AGH University of Science and Technology, majoring in Electronic Engineering. Currently, I am working on my engineering thesis project, focusing on the application of transformers in the design of a "Flyback converter with very wide input voltage."

A brief overview of my project: I am part of the AGHRacing team in the Electronic EV group, where we are developing a new electric bolide. The specific aspect I am working on is the "HV Indicator," a security system. The nominal input voltage is limited to 600 VDC (accumulator voltage), and the project aims to illuminate red LEDs when the power is turned on. The input range for LED activation is 60-600 VDC, with voltages above 60 VDC considered as dangerous.

I have been studying an example application design for automotive systems at:

https://www.power.com/sites/default/files/documents/DER-946Q_10W_7pt5V1pt333A_30-1kVDC_Iso_Fly_PS_INN3947CQ.pdf

However, I am struggling to locate the recommended transformer for this application. Therefore, I am reaching out if you could suggest a suitable substitute that aligns with my project requirements. Access to such a resource would significantly enhance the depth and quality of my work. If there are any specific guidelines or protocols for requesting such resources, please provide the details. I am more than willing to comply with any necessary procedures.

I understand that your time is valuable, and I appreciate your consideration of my request.

Thank you very much.

Best regards

What I think you need to do in this case is to contact our RTSS service and request some transformer samples specifically made to the DER-946Q specification. The link is here:

Instead of trying to re-design the transformer, you should ask for a design made to the DER-948Q specification. There is a fee for this service, depending on the number of samples ordered.

Hi Jakub Grelak,

You may also read on the Application Note AN-106. This is a guide on designing a flyback converter for automotive applications using InnoSwitch3-AQ. This can give an idea on how to design a transformer based on your specifications. You can use this in conjunction with the PI Expert Online by creating a new design and selecting "Automotive" for the Application option.
